FREE Hebrew Essentials is an educational app for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch that tests you on your Hebrew vocabulary skills one word at a time.
Flashcards are the name of the game with FREE Hebrew Essentials. Flip through a vast variety of them and learn as many words as you're able. With each new word shown, you can listen to a native speaker say them to have a better idea of how they're pronounced. When the word has a different pronunciation for a masculine or feminine variant, the app shows you both words, a nice feature. You can also choose vocabulary word categories and focus on specific areas like numbers, holidays, or greetings.
Once you've got some vocabulary under your belt, FREE Hebrew Essentials offers quizzes to strengthen and reinforce the words you've learned. Each quiz tests you on a set of ten words, giving you the English word and requiring you to choose the Hebrew equivalent from four options. FREE Hebrew Essentials allows you to switch from English-Hebrew to Hebrew-English while learning the flashcards and taking the quiz as well.
Unfortunately, if you don't already know the Hebrew alphabet, FREE Hebrew Essentials is not the app for you. The app does not give you the transliterated words in the Latin alphabet, making it impossible to learn which letters make what sounds. You can still listen to the pronunciation, however.
FREE Hebrew Essentials is a good refresher for Hebrew languages students who want to test their knowledge.
